My PLN 1
Project Wild On Saturday October 13th, I attended the professional development activity, Project Wild. Project Wild is an environmental education workshop for teacher candidates. Project Wild is sponsored by The Canadian Wildlife Federation This full-day, hands-on program provides valuable environmental education experiences and resources that can be used in any classroom and for any grade. Project wild was a great experience! I learned a lot from the instructors and by collaborating with my peers in the many activities.
In particular, I would use the Oh Deer game. The game includes the whole class consistently which is great! To start: have students stand in a line (side-side), have two students stand across from large group (side-side). The big group represents the environment and the two students are two deer. Students who are environment make symbols to indicate if they are elements of: water (hands over mouth), food (hands on stomach) and/or space (hands on hips). Deer do the same, according to basic needs. Begin rounds: students run to one another and match up based on the element indicated. Students will learn hands-on the cycle of deer growth. Once resources are worn out for the deer, everyone becomes environmental elements. Continue playing to demonstrate the the life-cycle. Add wolves to prey on deer as they run for elements of the environment. Add infections to remove deer as well.
* In any/every round, students can only match up in pairs (of the same element, or prey if a wolf/disease).
